Almost everyone now has a basic understanding of a computer programming language and when you ask someone what that basic understanding is, they’ll say something like “it’s a language the computer understands and a means to tell the computer what to do”. One has to admit, it does save us the complexity of what it really is which is a set of instructions or algorithm that give an expected output, and this sounds simpler.

There are numerous programming languages which comprises of different syntax and methods and mode of usage.

A number of these languages can do the same time and at the same time they can be used individually to solve and accomplish different things. Do you know the Top 10 Mostly Used Computer Programming Languages in 2020?

Before we begin let’s see some popular and well used programming languages that didn’t make the top 10 list.

Dart: This was developed by Google and is used to build mobile, desktop, server, and web applications. Popularly known for its usage to build cross platform mobile applications that can run on both Android and iOS.

Rust: Is an open-source systems programming language that focuses on speed, memory safety and is used to create a wide range of new software applications, such as game engines, operating systems, file systems, browser components and simulation engines for virtual reality.

Visual Basic: Is a programming language developed by Microsoft that can be used to build Windows applications, web applications and Windows phone applications. Programs developed in Visual Basic will only run on a Windows Operating System.

Go: or GoLang, as it is called, is a robust system-level language used for programming across large-scale network servers and big distributed systems.

Kotlin: This was developed by Google and is an alternative to Java for Android application development and can also be used for web development with JavaScript as well as server side development.

The above mentioned did not make up Top 10 Mostly Used Computer Programming Languages in 2020 based on some factors. Are you still asking which is the Most Popular Programming Language in 2020? Find out.

Now to commence fully into the Top 10 Mostly Used Computer Programming Languages in 2020

Top 10 Mostly Used Computer Programming Languages in 2020

10. TypeScript

It is a relatively new language launched for public use in 2012, developed and maintained by Microsoft. TypeScript may be used to develop JavaScript applications for both client-side and server-side execution as with Node.js and also has the same print statement as JavaScript.

Console.log(“Welcome to WASPLIGHT”)

The above code will give an output of Welcome to Wasplight.

At this point you’re probably asking yourself how a language not up to a decade of publicity has made it this far, well its basically because it’s a better version of JavaScript.

TypeScript is easier to read and understand and therefore easier to debug, it simplifies JavaScript.

9. Swift

This is another relatively new programming language that was released in 2014, holding the title of newest programming language that made this list. Swift was designed to work with Apple’s operating systems such as macOS, iOS, watchOS, tvOS and beyond.

Used for making mobile applications, is really design oriented, for web applications both server side and client side. The print statement for swift is quite easy and similar to that of Python.

print(“Check your updates on money making platforms at www.wasplight.com”)

The above code gives an out of Check your updates on money making platforms at www.wasplight.com. If you’re wondering why an even younger language made the top 10, the reason is Apple being one of the biggest tech companies in the world with their products always in high demand. I could give you a hundred reasons why so many developers are diving into swift and Apple but that would be an article on its own.

8. Objective-C

This was also developed by Apple and was initially released in 1984 and is the main programming language used by Apple for the OS X and iOS operating systems and their respective APIs, Cocoa and Cocoa Touch.

In 2018 Swift surpassed Objective-C in measured popularity meaning adoption of Swift by third-party developers like myself and people that don’t work for Apple is high, but much of Apple’s operating system still uses Objective-C.

Objective-C can applied just like Swift with its uses based on but not limited to Apple products. Now lets see the print statement for this language.

int main() {
NSLog(@”Scam or legit, we review, you decide! \n”);
return 0;

The above code gives an output of Scam or legit, we review, you decide!

7. R

You may be wondering why it just being called R but this is made it up to the Top 10 Mostly Used Computer Programming Languages in 2020.

This was introduced in 1993 by Rcore team and is widely used among statisticians and data miners for developing statistical software and data analysis as well as data analysts, researchers and marketers to retrieve, clean, analyze, visualize and present data.

Now you might think ‘R programming language is only constrained to data analysis and processing and can’t be used to produce software’s’ but the applications of understanding data can be used in several fields such as banking and finance, healthcare, social media, e-commerce etc. All fields use past data in order to make adjustments for better product and service.

Below is the print statement for R.

> print (“Hello, WASPLIGHTERS”)

The above code gives an output of Hello, WASPLIGHTERS

6. PHP

Created in 1994 by a Danish-Canadian programmer, popular general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited to web development.

PHP is the most used server-side programming language by far and approximately 75% of all webpages are powered by PHP, we can see sites like Facebook, YouTube and Wikipedia are originally written in PHP.

Imagine if PHP went for a job interview with the above experience and stats, well it’s up to you to decide if it gets the job. You’re probably wandering what makes this programming language so vast in backend or server-side when we have other languages like Python, Java, Ruby, Node.js and Perl that can do the same thing.

PHP it’s suitable for web content and backend data output, it provides you with a complete toolkit of functions and classes right out of the box that makes backend development for dynamic and easier.

PHP has two print statements echo and print, which is in a PHP tag you decide what you like.

<?php

echo “Was Wasplight built on PHP?”;

?>

The above code gives an output of Was Wasplight built on PHP? .

5. C/C++

C programming language was developed in 1972 holding the title of the oldest programming language on this list and C++ was developed in 1979 as an extension of the C language but the initial release was not until 1985. If this list was based on applications and not on mostly used, this language would be the top dog.

One of the most outstanding use of C is its used to develop new programming languages, put simply, some programming languages are written in C or uses C like syntax such as Perl, Java, PHP, C#, GoLang, Swift etc. Other prominent uses include

• Used to design operating systems like Windows and Apple.

• Used to develop desktop applications like Microsoft Office.

• Used to develop games

• Used to design database like MySQL.

• Used to develop embedded systems.

• Used to design web browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

I would probably make a top 10 list on the uses of C language

int main()
{
printf(“Go beyond, PLUS ULTRA!!! \n”);
}

The above code gives an output of Go beyond, PLUS ULTRA!!!

4. C#

Pronounced like the musical note C-sharp was first introduced to the world in 2000 by Microsoft and quite often a lot of beginners in programming find it difficult to differentiate between C#, C and C++ but I hope with the little explanations given in this article, it can be distinguished better. C# can be used to develop software’s inclined with Windows but not limited to and few of its uses include;

• Used to develop Windows client applications like Photoshop.

• Used to create web applications through the use of ASP.NET.

• The Unity game engine which is one of the biggest software’s in game development runs on C#.

• Used for website development.

• Used for backend services.

• Used for developing mobile applications with the use of Xamarin.

• Net.framework was developed with C#

• Few of the programs created with C# include; windows installer XML, Microsoft Visual studio, Paint.NET etc.

using System;

class Program
{
public static void Main(string[] args)
{
Console.WriteLine(“Visit Wasplight Daily”);
}
}

I believe you already know what the above code will give as output.

Vital Information

The things happening in the world today (Covid-19, Protest, Riot) are just trailer for what will happen if you are not raptured. If the trumpet sounds today, where will you spend eternity? In Heaven or in Hell?

Repent because the Kingdom of God is at Hand. No one can say they have not sinned, for all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. Repent today and be save from eternal damnation. Jesus Christ is knocking at the door of your heart today.

Are you a Christian already? Keep the fire burning in you, ask for fresh anointing daily.

3. JAVASCRIPT

Also known as ‘the king of the web’ first appeared in 1995 and alongside HTML and CSS, JavaScript is one of the core technologies of the World Wide Web. I personally named JavaScript the king of the web because of how it has been modernized to work on both Frontend and Backend (client-side and server-side web technologies) through the use of JS frameworks, libraries and runtime environments like React.JS, Vue.JS and Vanilla.JS.

Learn JavaScript for frontend with React.JS and backend with Node.JS and you can become a full stack developer with just JavaScript.

Most notably Node.JS which is used for the server-side of web development has had great growth in use but that’s not all JavaScript is used for and they generally include;

• Used to develop websites.

• Used to web applications.

• Used to make visually stunning presentations.

• Used to create server applications and web servers.

• Used to develop games.

• Used to develop mobile applications.

• Used to develop smartwatch applications.

The print statement for JavaScript is a simple consol.log()

Console.log(“hello African Developers”)

The above code gives an output of hello African Developers.

2. JAVA

This is a general-purpose programming language that first appeared in 1995 but was released publicly in 1996 and was originally developed to work for interactive but was too advanced for the function.

Java has had steady growth and applications since the early 2000s and has been a widely and mostly used language for quite a long time.

Java was the number one most used computer programming languages at one point for a very long while and this is because of its versatility in applicability in modern technologies.

The uses and applications of Java include;

• Mobile applications, most notably with Android Studio.

• Desktop GUI (graphic user interface) applications.

• Web based applications; Java can be used to program the server side of a website.

• Enterprise applications.

• Scientific applications.

• Gaming applications, I’m quite sure you’ve heard of Minecraft which is one of many games made with Java.

• Big Data Technologies.

• Cloud based applications.

• Business applications.

There are other applications of Java but we still have the number 1 spot to elaborate on.

public class WasplightApp {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println(“Hello World!”);
}
}
The above code gives an output of Hello World!.

1. PYTHON

This was first released in 1991 and is a general high purpose programming language. What really differentiates Python from other language is its ease in readability and it often uses English keywords whereas other programming languages use punctuation marks.

Contrary to popular beliefs and depictions, Python was not named after a Species of snake but was derived from the British comedy group Monty Python, whom Python creator Guido van Rossum enjoyed while developing the language.

According to a survey by Github, Python holds approximately 30 percent popularity among developers.

According to StackOverflow, Python is the highest most widely used programming language.

If you’re wondering how and why Python is so popular and widely used, let’s have a look at its uses;

• Web development

• Game development

• Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence

• Data Science and visualization

• Web Scraping Applications

• Business Applications

• Embedded Applications

• CAD(Computer Aided Design) Applications
• Desktop GUI

• Scientific Applications

The output statement for Python is a simple ‘print’

Print(‘have a nice day’)

When it comes to choosing a programming language, it depends on what you want to achieve and if the language you use is easy enough for you to understand.

A lot of people don’t like C even with its unique applications and we see popularity in Python because of its ease to read and write and understand, with that in mind it can’t do everything. No programming language is really hard or really easy, it all comes down to the user.
