As mentioned above, this is a Breed of Meleagris gallopavo. According to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, the Narragansett Turkey is a historic variety, unique to North America and is named for Narragansett Bay.
This bird has plumage with black, grey, tan and white feathers. It resembles the Bronze turkey but has feathers of grey or dull black replacing the Bronze’s distinctive coppery coloring.
The breed is prized for its excellent temperament combining a calm disposition with good maternal abilities. They mature early, are good egg producers, have excellent quality meat and when kept at liberty, it doesn’t wander too far from home. These characteristics makes them a bit preferred than other turkey.
Narragansett Turkey became the foundation of the turkey industry in New England and was especially important in Rhode island and Connecticut. It was popular in the Mid-Atlantic States and the Midwest. This breed was recognized by the American Poultry Association in 1874.
Characteristics of Narragansett Turkey
These are a large birds with very beautiful appearance. The bird has plumage with black, grey, tan and white feathers. The breed occasionally have bars of white feathers on their wings due to a genetic mutation not found outside the United States.
These birds have a black beard, a horn-colored beak, and a mostly featherless head and neck which range in color from red to blueish white.
The average live body weight of the Mature Narragansett Toms is around 10 to 12.7kg. And average live body weight of the mature hens is between 5.5 and 7.25kg. The bird can run quickly, can fly well, prefer to spend their nights roosting in trees.
Generally forage for insects, crickets and grasshoppers, can be raised with little supplemental feeds.
One amazing fact also its that this breed can tolerate almost all climate.
